Is Big-Money Cuban Signing Jose Abreu Capable of Instant MLB Stardom?

Is Big-Money Cuban Signing Jose Abreu Capable of Instant MLB Stardom?
Charles Rex Arbogast/Associated Press
The Chicago White Sox made Jose Abreu the richest Cuban player in Major League Baseball history this offseason, inking the slugging first baseman to a six-year, $68 million contract through 2019.
Yet, as is the case with any big-name international signee, the 27-year-old will now be expected to produce out of the gate this season, presumably hitting in the middle of order for the White Sox.
Cuban players have made an immediate impact in the major leagues in recent years, with Yoenis Cespedes’ eye-opening rookie campaign in 2012 or Yasiel Puig’s historically good 2013 season serving as prime examples. Though they both struggled at times in their stateside debuts, each player’s respective ability to make adjustments allowed him to overcome said struggles and turn in an impressive rookie campaign.
Although Abreu is a much different type of player, the big-money Cuban import has the makings of a future star in the major leagues.

Background
Abreu put up monster offensive numbers annually during roughly a decade playing in Cuba's Serie Nacional
In 2009-10, Abreu finished third in the league’s MVP voting—behind well-known mashers Alfredo Despaigne and Yulieski Gourriel—after batting .388/.542/.786 with 30 home runs and a 55/74 K/BB ratio in 94 games. In addition to drawing 32 intentional walks, he also led the league in on-base percentage and slugging while finishing second in batting average and home runs.
During the following season, Abreu put himself on the map with one of top offensive performances in Serie history. Appearing in 77 games, he batted .448/.592/.952 with 16 doubles, 37 home runs and a 37/66 K/BB ratio, and was subsequently named league MVP. During the regular season, Abreu tied Yoenis Cespedes with 33 home runs despite missing 23 games with bursitis in his shoulder.
Abreu once again posted huge numbers during the 2011-12 season, batting .394/.543/.835 with 18 doubles, 37 home runs, 103 RBI and a 43/80 K/BB ratio in 92 games. Although he paced the circuit in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS, he finished behind Despaigne in the end-of-season MVP voting.

Last year, Abreu furthered his success by batting .344/.479/.604 with 17 doubles, 19 home runs and 43/58 K/BB ration in 83 games. However, his season was cut short due to his participation in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, in which he batted .360/.385/.760 with three home runs in 25 at-bats.

Scouting Report
Listed at 6’3”, 255 pounds, Abreu is arguably the most prolific Cuban sluggers in the country’s rich baseball history. A right-handed hitter who showcases robust power to all fields, the 27-year-old employs a unique double toe-tap load to initiate an easy, but powerful, swing.
Your browser does not support iframes.
While some scouts are divided about how his strength-driven bat speed will translate at the major league level, he does an excellent job of getting the barrel on the ball and uses his strength to drive it with authority from line-to-line.
In previous international competitions, such as the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam and the World Baseball Classic last March, Abreu demonstrated the ability to square velocity, though he seemed to prefer pitches that allowed him to extend his hands. Like most Cuban hitters, Abreu can punish mediocre breaking balls within the strike zone but also chases better offerings off the plate.
In spite of his perceived shortcomings at the dish, White Sox manager Robin Ventura believes that Abreu’s relentless work ethic in the cage will aid his success next season (via MLB.com):
It's professional. That's another one of those things we liked about him, numbers-wise and talent...He has more of a professional approach for being a big guy, hitting the ball the other way, more aware of his pitch. That's stuff you like to see, the way they work, they go about it. He knows how to practice.
...
You see that with guys even from other teams...You would try to peak over at Edgar Martinez in the cage to see what he was doing. When you play the Yankees, you get in the cage when Don Mattingly is in there to see what he's doing and why. Hopefully, he has that. His practice habits and the things that he does, he has the potential to do that.
Though Abreu will have plenty to prove next season, it's hard to not get excited about his future when mentioned him in the same sentence as as Martinez and Mattingly.

2014: What to expect
Compared to other recent Cuban players, there will be greater expectations tied to Abreu’s bat due to his projection as a middle-of-the-order first baseman. Plus, while Cespedes and Puig also provide value in the outfield and on the base paths, Abreu’s impact in the major leagues will depend solely on his ability to hit for power and drive in runs. Basically, he has a smaller margin for error as a bat-only player.
However, the White Sox are confident that the right-handed hitting slugger will make an immediate impact next season. And if the statistical projection models are correct, then Abreu should emerge as one of the more productive first baseman in the American League:

Jose Abreu's 2014 Statistical Projections (Steamer, ZIPS)

PA 2B HR RBI BB% K% BA BABIP wOBA
Steamer 398 17 25 63 11.0% 18.9% .272 .279 .384
ZIPS 538 23 26 65 10.6% 17.1% .273 .288 .371
FanGraphs.com
As you can see, both the Steamer and ZIPS projection models (via FanGraphs) believe that Abreu will be good for a .270-plus batting average (not driven by his batting average on balls in play), 25-plus home runs and solid strikeout and walk rates, especially for a first-year player.
So, how does Abreu’s potential production compare to some of the AL’s other top first baseman? Here’s a look at the ZIPS projections:

2014 ZIPS Projections: AL First Basemen

PA 2B HR RBI BB% K% BA BABIP wOBA
Jose Abreu 538 23 26 65 10.6% 17.1% .273 .288 .371
Chris Davis 612 27 41 107 9.0% 30.9% .267 .326 .370
Edwin Encarnacion 564 27 30 89 11.5% 13.5% .276 .271 .377
Mike Napoli 476 24 22 68 12.2% 30.5% .241 .314 .350
Prince Fielder 669 30 30 101 12.6% 16.3% .276 .293 .364
Eric Hosmer 653 31 20 77 8.2% 15.1% .296 .325 .352
FanGraphs.com
While there are plenty of question marks regarding Abreu’s performance next season, the ZIPS projections suggest that the 27-year-old’s production will rank in the top five among AL first baseman.
Granted this is purely speculative, but it's difficult to envision him not making an impact next season in the major leagues.

Dodgers reach agreement with Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena

Big day for shortstop news in major league baseball, what with Derek Jeter announcing this will be his last season and the Dodgers apparently providing the answer to team president Stan Kasten’s “mystery player” by agreeing to terms Wednesday with a big name -- or at least a really long one.
Erisbel Arruebarruena, reportedly a slick-fielding, light-hitting shortstop, has reach a contract agreement with the Dodgers, two sources told The Times’ Dylan Hernandez. He still has to pass a physical, and there could yet be some immigration issues to be resolved. The Dodgers have not formally announced the deal.
But otherwise the Dodgers’ Cuban pipeline continues to flow. The Dodgers already have two projected Cuban starters in their lineup in outfielder Yasiel Puig and second baseman Alex Guerrero.
Arruebarruena certainly doesn’t figure to start and at best has an immediate future as a backup infielder, one of the Dodgers’ few real needs. More likely, he’ll start the season in the minors to get used to American baseball while the Dodgers see if they can make do with Chone Figgins, Dee Gordon, Justin Turner or Brandan Harris.
Kasten had told season-ticket holders Monday that the Dodgers soon would be adding a mystery player.
Arruebarruena, who turns 24 next month, spent six seasons playing in Cuba so he’s not subject to the international spending cap. He reportedly defected in November and established residency in Haiti.
He bats right-handed and played with Puig for Cienfuegos. In 2012-2013 he hit .293 with a .366 on-base percentage and a .422 slugging percentage. He sounds similar to Miguel Rojas, a non-roster invitee best known for his glove.
That hardly translates into someone ready to make an offensive mark in the majors. But on a team seemingly loaded with offense, later in the season the Dodgers could find him a useful fill-in.
For an organization whose major shortstop prospect, Corey Seager, spent last season at Class A and could be moved to third, Arruebarruena at least adds needed organizational depth.

Antonio Castro believes Cuban baseball must sever ties with political past

ESPN
Team Cuba
Robert Galbraith/Reuters/LandovCastro believes the future of Cuban baseball relies on severing ties with the country's political past.

en espanol:  aqui >>

ANTONIO "TONY" CASTRO is quick to point out that he is a man without a title. One of nine confirmed children of Fidel, the Cuban revolutionary and former president, he holds no official government office and treads lightly on the Castro name. A practicing orthopedic surgeon in Havana, Castro, 43, typically responds to political questions about his father by politely steering the conversation in a different direction -- usually to baseball. As a vice president of the International Baseball Federation, a position he has held since 2009, Castro has been a fierce and outspoken proponent of a distinctly antisocialist concept: Cuban players' right to play professionally, earning money both in Cuba and abroad. At home, he uses what clout he has to grease the wheels of a hard-line sports bureaucracy that oversees the Cuban national team, which is facing financial hardship, equipment shortages and a rising number of player defections. And there are signs that his voice is being heard. In the fall, the Council of Ministers, which is headed by Castro's uncle Raul, approved a new rule that allows Cuban baseball players to play in professional leagues outside Cuba and earn a salary. The move is widely seen as the start of Cuba's opening its doors to the rest of the world. Yet because of the U.S. economic embargo, the new rule does not yet fulfill Tony's dream of seeing Cubans in the major leagues without defecting. During a candid interview in September at the historic Hotel Nacional in Havana, Castro explained why he'll continue to push for closer ties with Major League Baseball.

Why is baseball so important to the people of Cuba?
In Cuba, when you speak about baseball, baseball is not a sport. It's a culture. When the boy is born, the father's gift is the bat and the ball. Through baseball, we teach our children everything about life. We can show our children how to win, lose, respect other people and work in groups.
What are the challenges for baseball in Cuba right now?
A lot, a lot. The economic problems for sure, because we need bats, we need gloves, we need balls, we need everything. We have players going to play and win millions of dollars [in America]. I mean, you have a player who can go from playing on a high-caliber team here in Cuba, where you can't even get bats ... to the next day making millions playing for the Yankees or the Dodgers or any other major league team. We've lost a lot of ballplayers. I think that we have to work, not only on the Cuban side but on the side of the United States as well, in Major League Baseball, to -- try to find a realistic solution to this problem.
Last season there were 21 Cuban-born players in MLB, including Dodgers rookie star Yasiel Puig and A's home run derby champ Yoenis Cespedes. Most recently, in October, the Chicago White Sox signed Cuban defector Jose Abreu to a $68 million deal. But the real problem, as Castro sees it, isn't that they've joined the major leagues; he insists he wants to see Cubans playing at the highest level. Rather, it's that those players are not allowed to return home to play for the Cuban national team.
What do you want to see happen in the future?
I think we have to look for a solution to this now. The fans don't have to keep losing out on seeing their ballplayers here, or for them to go and play in other leagues and then not be able to come back and play with the Cuban national team. I think our ballplayers who trained here earned the right to go play in other leagues and measure themselves against a higher level. They should be able to do it -- without fear -- and come back and play with their national team. And then in one way or another also play in the leagues here in Cuba. Then no one loses. And they don't have to be separated from their family, from their friends.
Since 1960, when the U.S. imposed an economic embargo on Cuba, players on the island have been forbidden from playing professionally in America; also because of the embargo, MLB forbids teams from hiring Cuban citizens. So if a player leaves Cuba to play in the U.S., MLB requires that player to defect, thus renouncing his Cuban citizenship. As of January 2013, a new Cuban law has lightened the restrictions on returning to the island.
Fidel Castro
Desmond Boylan/Reuters/LandovCastro is quick to avoid questions about his father, Fidel, and how the former president views the recent rule changes.
What scenario do you see in terms of salary? If a player wants to sign with a team for several million dollars, would there be some sort of requirement that some of that money go to the Cuban government?
The way I feel, in the future the money is for the players. The most important thing is the player's money, and they decide to do with this money what they want to do. I don't see this as a problem, no.
If baseball players are allowed to make millions and bring that back to Cuba, doesn't that contradict the idea of socialism -- that there aren't supposed to be millionaires?
I don't see the problem with that because now in Cuba we have artists and musicians who travel outside and bring their money back here. Maybe not millions, but in life, you have a social difference. Let me tell you, the baseball players here in Cuba, all the people love them. If one player comes with millions, everybody loves this guy for sure because the baseball in Cuba is different. The most important [thing] for people is not the millions. The most important [thing] for the Cuban people, for the fanatics, is to see this guy play at the highest level.
The average wage in Cuba is about $20 a month. Under the new rule, in addition to what they make playing abroad, top athletes could earn from $40 to $200 a month playing for Cuba. There are new incentives for the teams as well, with the national championship team earning a $2,700 bonus (not including individual player bonuses). While this sort of pay-for-play system might seem commonplace, it's a capitalist incentive -- and Cuba is still technically a country ruled by communism, a structure under which the government is supposed to treat and pay everyone equally and private enterprise is banned. Baseball isn't the only area in which the government is backing off its socialist principles. Recently, artists and entertainers have also been allowed to work abroad.
Have you approached MLB about letting Cuban players come back and play for the Cuban national team in the offseason?
We need to discuss this, because the rules are the rules. U.S. law impedes the Cuban ballplayers from playing in the big leagues without breaking with their country. That is, they have to break ties with Cuba. They have to become, whether they want to or not, defectors. Because they say that the money that a ballplayer earns could benefit Havana. That's a crazy idea, isn't it? I think Cuba has to budge. Cuba has to do things. Also on the side of Major League Baseball, we need to sit down together and talk about this openly, to search for a realistic solution to this issue.
Because of his role as a VP for the International Baseball Federation, Castro has been able to develop relationships with MLB and USA Baseball officials. Castro says he's been to New York and sat in the offices of MLB and talked about the issue of Cuban players in the majors. MLB officials -- who won't say anything on the record about Cuba -- clearly have an interest in Cuban players but insist there isn't much they can do while the embargo is still in place.
What would it mean to Cubans to see players like Puig and Cespedes playing in the World Baseball Classic?
Oh, it's amazing. If you walk through the streets and ask everybody, the people for sure will tell you it's a dream. They want to see these players play a game with the Cuban national team. And you know the problem exists and [Cuba and MLB] need to resolve this. The question is, why not? Why don't we find the solution? The only thing we need is the will to do that. For sure we can find a solution, but we need to work together -- everybody.

Alexander Guerrero shares how he got from Cuba to Dodgers

atlallday.com
Alexander Guerrero and Yasiel Puig were both born in Cuba. Both were given multi-year contracts and lots of money to play baseball for the Dodgers.
Otherwise, they seem to be short on similarities. At least on the surface.
Guerrero and Puig were among the many Dodgers who bussed around Los Angeles with the team’s annual community caravan Friday. It was the first visit to Los Angeles for Guerrero, the 28-year-old infielder who signed a four-year, $28 million contract in October.
Unlike Puig, Guerrero easily volunteered details about his journey from Cuba to the United States.
“I thought about leaving for four years,” he said. “It’s a difficult decision to leave your family and your country, but I decided to.”
Along with his brother and two friends, Guerrero successfully sailed to Haiti on a boat last summer — a “very difficult” journey. It was his third attempt to defect.
“I decided my future was going to be here,” he said. “There have been a lot of Cuban stars over the years.”
Guerrero said he didn’t play competitively in Cuba for one year before successfully defecting — not as punishment for his prior attempts to defect, but because he “just decided with his people to take a year off and make a decision about what my future was going to be like.”
Even though he was in line for a large payday as he got settled in the Dominican Republic, Guerrero badly needed competition. A natural shortstop, Guerrero also needed to learn how to play second base, a position he admits he never played in Cuba.
“The movements are all reversed,” he said, “but anyone who plays shortstop can play any position in the infield.”
It didn’t help when Guerrero’s Dominican Winter League season was cut short by a pair of hamstring strains. He played just 12 games all winter, batting .289 (11 for 38). In five weeks of training since, Guerrero said his health has been fine.
Guerrero’s entry into the United States was delayed until January while he awaited approval for a work visa. After reaching Miami two weeks ago, Guerrero went to the Dodgers’ Camelback Ranch facility in Glendale, Ariz., for some early infield work. He’ll head back after this weekend.
Dodgers pitchers and catchers report Feb. 8 and position players are set to report five days later. Guerrero thinks he’ll be ready for full-time major-league work by Opening Day — March 22 in Australia.
“Ultimately, it’s going to be the team’s decision,” he said, “but I’m going to work as hard as I can.”
Baseball isn’t his only priority. Guerrero’s wife, 9-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter are still in Cuba. His brother is in the Dominican Republic and “will be the next person to come over.”
Guerrero said his wife and children will come to the U.S. “in the next few months.”
Before fans get their first look at Guerrero in spring training, the question had to be asked: Is he just as aggressive on a baseball field as Puig?
“No, different,” Guerrero said. “I’m more calm in my game. Puig’s an aggressive guy with a lot of energy. I’m more even keel.”

A left-handed pitcherYankees prospect from Cuba faces DUI charge in Tampa

batazoazul.webnode.es
A New York Yankees pitching prospect was arrested early Friday after police spotted him in a 2014 red Mercedes going the wrong way on a one-way street in South Tampa.
Omar Luis Rodriguez, 21, faces a charge of driving under the influence.
Rodriguez is a left-handed pitcher who defected from Cuba in 2012. He signed a contract with the Yankees in 2012 and received a multimillion dollar signing bonus. He played in the Gulf Coast Rookie League last year.
Tampa police said it took two cruisers to slow and then stop Rodriguez during a half-mile attempt to pull him over at 3:15 a.m.
An officer first spotted the Mercedes heading west on Platt Street, which is one-way eastbound, said police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor. The officer turned on his emergency lights and tried to pull the driver over, but the car then turned north on Armenia Avenue, which is one-way in the southbound direction.
McGregor said the Mercedes then turned west on Kennedy Boulevard and was finally pulled over near Lincoln Avenue when another officer got in front of the Mercedes and slowed to a stop.
Rodriguez, who gave police a Miami address, registered a 0.102 blood-alcohol level. In Florida, a driver is considered impaired with a blood-alcohol level of .08.
He was booked and later released after posting $500 bail, according to jail records.
Rodriguez pitched for Cuba during the 2010 World Junior Baseball Championship and drew attention when he struck out eight batters during a complete-game that eliminated Team USA in the semifinals. He led Cuba to a bronze medal and was named to the competition’s all-tournament team.

Rangers sign Jose Contreras to Minor League deal with invitation to Spring Training

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are going to give right-hander Jose Contreras a chance to be the second-oldest pitcher in franchise history.
The Rangers announced on Thursday they have signed Contreras to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Contreras turns 42 on Friday.
The club also signed right-handed pitcher Nate Adcock and outfielder Bryan Petersen to Minor League contracts with invitations to Spring Training. Texas has seven players coming to camp on Minor League contracts, including pitchers Colby Lewis, Ross Wolf and Aaron Poreda, and outfielder Brad Snyder.
Contreras spent last season with the Pirates and the Red Sox organizations. He made seven relief appearances for the Pirates in May, allowing five runs in five innings. Contreras, who had Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on June 20, 2012, was 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 27 relief appearances in the Minor Leagues.
Contreras is 0-3 with a 5.88 ERA in six starts for Licey in the Dominican Republic Winter League.
"We're excited to bring Jose into the organization," Rangers farm director Mike Daly said. "He's a player we have history with going back to when he defected from Cuba and Don Welke scouted him. We had a number of scouts see him in the DR Winter league. We liked his stuff down there, experience and veteran presence. We feel he has a chance to come to camp and compete to make the club."
Contreras left his native Cuba in 2002. He had been one of the best pitchers in Cuba and when he was cleared to pitch in the Major Leagues, it set off a serious bidding war between the Yankees and the Red Sox. When the Yankees won the bidding, Red Sox president Larry Lucchino made his famous remark in calling them the "Evil Empire."
Contreras' best year came in 2005 after being traded to the White Sox. He was 15-7 with a 3.61 ERA, selected to the American League All-Star team and won three more games in the playoffs as the White Sox ended up winning the World Series. He was 36-45 with a 4.84 ERA in 103 starts and seven relief appearances over the next four years before becoming a full-time reliever for the Phillies in 2010. He was 6-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 67 relief appearances that season. But he has been on the disabled list five times in the last three seasons.

Dayron Varona/ www.vanguardia.co.cu

Erisbel Arruebarruena Young Cuban shortstop defects to U.S.

Read >>
A slick-fielding Cuban prospect has just defected to the United States, and he has one of the longest surnames in the history of baseball in Cuba.
He is Erisbel Barbaro Arruebarruena, a 23-year-old, right-handed hitting shortstop.
In 2008-09, at 18 years old, he was playing in Serie Nacional, Cuba's top league, for Cienfuegos, a year in which he hit .242 with an OPS of .596. He went 8-for-12 as a base stealer, but provided solid defense as the starting shortstop.
By 2009-10, he had upped his offensive game to the tune of .257 and a far better OPS of .704, and improved again the next season, hitting .280/.314/.484 with eight home runs and 57 strikeouts.

Tony Castro: ¡Queremos negociar!

Right Handler Pitcher Raciel Iglesias defects from Cuba

just another one who doesn't believe on castro's sport reforms
-----------------------
Read Here >>

Young right-hander Raicel Iglesias has become the latest Cuban baseball player to successfully defect from his home country, reports the Havana Times.

Iglesias left Cuba by sea on Oct. 9 and eventually made his way to Mexico, where he is currently residing, per MLBTR. The 23-year-old was detained in his initial attempt to flee Cuba back in late September. He attempted to elude capture by lying low in the mountains for several days, but was eventually forced out of hiding due to dehydration. At that point, he was arrested and handed a one-year suspension from baseball, according to Diario de Cuba.
The right-hander will not be able to negotiate with big-league clubs until he establishes residency somewhere and is declared a free agent by MLB. The process usually takes a few months, but once that happens he will be able to sign with any club.
Because he is 23 and spent at least three seasons in Cuba's top league, Iglesias is not beholden to the bonus pool restrictions that limit the contracts of other international free agents. Like former national squad teammate and new White Sox first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu, Iglesias could be headed for a nice pay day once he hits the open market.
Per Baseball America, Iglesias is a 5 11", 165-pound right-hander with a mid-90s fastball, a sweeping breaking ball and the command concerns that always seem to accompany young pitching prospects.

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-917438

Yasiel Puig 2.0: What to Expect from Dodgers' Absurdly Talented Phenom in 2014

Vin Scully, the legendary announcer of the Los Angeles Dodgers, refers to Yasiel Puig as "the Wild Horse." As far as nicknames go, it was the perfect one for Puig in 2013.
Puig is indeed a powerful, majestic creature. Hence the "horse." But in his rookie season, he basically lived by his own rules. Hence the "wild."
But what about in 2014? Will Puig still be a wild horse, or will he be too refined for that nickname to make sense? Will he stay the same, or will he change?
Puig shouldn't want to change too much. When one hits .319/.391/.534 in one's first full regular season and .333/.366/.410 in one's first postseason, one should be focused on keeping things the same more than on undergoing a complete overhaul.
Nonetheless, 2014 Puig should be a different player than 2013 Puig in several different respects—and a different all-around player as a result.
Let's break it down.
Puig at the Plate

Getty Images
If there's one thing that defined Puig's approach at the plate in 2013, it was his aggressiveness.
Puig saw only 3.57 pitches per plate appearance, according to Baseball-Reference.com, a low number by today's standards. One reason for that was Puig's tendency to swing at the first pitch. Whereas the rest of the league swung at the first pitch only 27 percent of the time, Puig swung at the first pitch 43 percent of the time.
Ordinarily, this is finger-wagging time. Swinging at the first pitch generally isn't the best idea, as the odds of success are usually in the pitcher's favor. And of all the things batters can do, there's nothing worse than giving a pitcher an easy one-pitch out.
But some players are special. Puig, as it happens, is very special.
Puig hit .551 with a 1.072 slugging percentage when he swung at the first pitch in 2013. Per Baseball-Reference.com, his 1.642 OPS when swinging at the first pitch was the best in the league.
The amazing part is that it's not like he was just crushing first-pitch fastballs. He was crushing first-pitch everythings, as these numbers from Brooks Baseball can vouch:

Brooks Baseball
If Puig was only crushing first-pitch fastballs, the writing on the wall would be instructing pitchers to pitch Puig backwards. For Puig, that would mean spending the winter preparing for that to happen.
But since this isn't the case, don't be surprised when Puig continues his habit of being a first-pitch hacker in 2014. He's proven he can be monstrously successful at it against all types of pitches, so more power to him.
Courtesy of MLB Advanced Media via MLB.com.
One offseason project Puig should be interested in, however, is preparing for Uncle Charles.
You can see in the above table that Puig did fine against first-pitch sliders, and that's part of a larger trend. He hit sliders to the tune of a .323 average and a .333 ISO, clubbing 10 of his 19 homers against sliders. Eight of those came against right-handed pitchers, meaning he was dangerous against a pitch that might be the biggest weapon for right-handed pitchers against right-handed batters.
But curveballs? Puig liked those about as much as Pedro Cerrano.
If you look up Puig's pitch values on FanGraphs, one thing you notice is that he generated exactly zero runs above average against curveballs in 2013. And if we use Brooks Baseball to take a closer look, we notice that he was particularly out of his league against two-strike curves:

Yasie Puig vs. Curveballs
SplitSeenSwing %Whiff/Swing %HRBABIP
Overall14643.8439.061.316
Two-Strike Counts4564.4441.380.125
Brooks Baseball
Puig did a good job of laying off curveballs in most counts, but not with two strikes. It's therefore not good that he wasn't able to make contact with them as well as he did in other counts and not the least bit surprising that he wasn't able to do anything with the ones he did make contact with.
This, mind you, is but a primary symptom of a larger problem: Puig was not a good two-strike hitter in his rookie season.
Puig had just a .509 OPS in two-strike counts, according to Baseball-Reference.com. The league average was .514, so Puig wasn't even average when he had two strikes on him.
Part of the problem was that Puig was predictable. As his zone profile over at Brooks Baseball can show, pitchers loved to throw Puig breaking and off-speed junk off the outside corner, and he couldn't do anything with these pitches when he decided to swing.
If there's a bright side, however, it's that Puig did a better job laying off this junk in August and September than he did in June and July.
That he was able to make a midseason adjustment to what the scouting reports were telling pitchers to do suggests pretty clearly that the Wild Horse isn't a brainless horse. Ben Lindbergh of Baseball Prospectus noticed as much in early August when he noted that Puig had begun to adjust to adjustments pitchers had begun making to him, and this is a case where the numbers fit the narrative.

Courtesy of MLB Advanced Media via MLB.com.
In Puig's debut month of June, he had a 1.180 OPS. In July, his OPS regressed to .789, and he struck out in nearly 30 percent of his plate appearance. But then in his next 49 games, Puig posted an .897 OPS and struck out in only about 20 percent of his plate appearances. That covers the period when he was better at laying off the junk pitchers were throwing him off the outside corner with two strikes.
So in looking forward to Puig's hitting in 2013, you can expect to see one thing stay the same and a couple things change.
The thing that will stay the same is Puig's aggressiveness, particularly on the first pitch. It worked for Puig because he proved capable of hitting all sorts of first pitches. Since pitching backwards isn't a clear option, pitchers don't have a clear avenue to pursue in this case. That works in Puig's favor.
As for what will change, expect Puig to fare better against curveballs. That's an area where simple experience could help the most, as Mike Trout told me recently that having a year in the big leagues "definitely" helped him improve his own production against curveballs in his second season.
Then there's Puig's two-strike approach. The latter end of the regular season saw him adjust to what pitchers liked to do with him in two-strike counts. If he's smart—and he's indicated that he is—he'll continue to work on the adjustment he made and become a better two-strike hitter.
It's a bit much to expect Puig to win a batting title or lead the league in on-base percentage in 2014, as he's not going to be able to go from being the Wild Horse to being Joey Votto or Miguel Cabrera in one offseason. He's also due for a BABIP regression after posting a .383 BABIP in 2013.
But after achieving a .925 OPS on raw talent in 2013, an OPS in that same neighborhood in 2014 is fair game if he does what must be done.
That takes care of what Puig has to do at the plate. Goodness knows, however, that the plate isn't the only area of concern with him.
Puig in the Field
If you buy into the defensive metrics, Puig was a very good defensive outfielder as a rookie.
Per FanGraphs, Puig posted a 9.7 UZR/150 in 2013. Among right fielders with at least 700 innings in the field, that was good for sixth in between Jay Bruce and Jose Bautista.
Fielding Bible metrics also approved of Puig's defense. He tallied 10 defensive runs saved (DRS) in 2013, good for seventh among right fielders.
We just don't tend to think of Puig as a very good outfielder, however, because...Well, because of stuff like what happened in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series:
Courtesy of MLB Advanced Media via MLB.com.
That's some lowlight reel. It contains a halfhearted throw that had no chance of getting the runner at home and allowed a runner to advance, another poor throw that went way over the catcher's head and allowed two runners to advance and a misplay that resulted in a runner going to second when first might have been the extent of his journey.
That last misplay was Puig's second such misplay in as many games, as he also turned what could have been an out off the bat of Matt Holliday into a double in Game 5.
It's plays like these that drove all of us crazy when watching Puig, and they did indeed happen too often.
The good news, however, is that Puig's throwing problem is really a "problem," per se. It's merely something that can be improved.
It's not a problem because Puig's arm did more good than harm in 2013. He tallied eight outfield assists, and he saved more runs above average with his arm than all but five other right fielders.
That's as good an indication that Puig shouldn't want to completely overhaul his approach to throwing, as his arm strength is a weapon that's going to come in handy a lot over a full season.
However, Puig must get better about picking his spots. Poor decisions with his throwing did cost the Dodgers on occasion in 2013. Poor decisions are likely to bite the Dodgers even more in 2014, as the scouting report on Puig's arm being out is likely to result in fewer baserunners giving him a chance to unleash his arm. Him nabbing baserunners will have to be the result of smart thinking more so than sheer arm strength.
Courtesy of MLB Advanced Media via MLB.com.
Assuming he's willing to respond to their efforts, this is an area where the Dodgers can help Puig. They can work with him on being better about reading situations as they're unfolding, which in turn will give him a better understanding of when to unleash his arm and when to holster it.
How exactly will Puig get better with his throwing? Look at it this way: Since his M.O. in 2013 was basically to be aggressive with his throwing 100 percent of the time, the only way to go is up.
Where things are less hopeful is in the department of misplays. For unlike with his throwing, there was no way Puig could do more good than harm when it came to misplays.
Puig officially made three fielding errors all season, but these played a part in him finishing third from the bottom among right fielders in error runs above average. That's bearing in mind that not every single one of his misplays was charged as an error. The Holliday double is a good example.
There's not much the Dodgers can do to help Puig in this regard. Helping him with throwing plays is basically a matter of them peddling fundamentals. Puig's tendency for misplays is more about focus.
The Dodgers can't teach him to be focused. It's an effort only Puig can make, and he has to want to make it.
There's, admittedly, not a whole lot of projection that can be done with Puig's defense. But if he responds to efforts to refine his throwing habits and takes it upon himself to be focused 100 percent of the time in the field, an already very good outfielder is going to become a great outfielder.
With hitting and defense covered, that just leaves baserunning.
Puig on the Bases
Whether Puig was an effective baserunner in 2013 varies depending on who you ask.
If you ask FanGraphs, he wasn't. In the eyes of their metrics, Puig logged minus-4.2 baserunning runs above average in 2013, making him one of the worst baserunning outfielders in the league.
But if you ask Baseball Prospectus, Puig was pretty good on the basepaths.
By BP's metrics, Puig accounted for 0.8 baserunning runs (BRR), technically making him an above-average baserunner. The only area where he did more harm than good was in stolen bases.
And it's easy to see why.

Getty Images
Puig did steal 11 bases in 2013, but he also got caught eight times. That's not a good success rate, and it obviously speaks to recklessness.
Consider this anecdote from MLB.com's Richard Justice about a July game against the San Francisco Giants:
For instance, on Sunday afternoon, he singled against the Giants and promptly stole second. And then almost without a thought -- actually with no thought at all -- he was thrown out attempting to steal third.
'I could smell it in the air,' Vin Scully said. 'The wild horse wanted to run.'
That was one of two times Puig was caught stealing third in 2013. He was successful once.
There's also the matter of the pickoffs. Puig was picked off four times in 2013, including twice while trying to steal. That's a few too many.
Puig has to pick his spots better with stolen bases, which is yet another project the Dodgers can help him with. And if he really wants to make a name for himself as a base stealer, he needs to take the time to study pitchers so he has more than just his athleticism to rely on.
Or, Puig could just decide to take it easy on stealing bases and stick to being a specialist at taking extra bases.
This is something Puig is already good at. He went first to third 12 of the 26 times he was standing on first base when a single was hit. All told, Baseball-Reference.com says he took an extra base or two over half the time he had a chance on base hits. BP's metrics say that the only Dodger better than Puig at turning baserunning plays on hits into runs was Carl Crawford.
Like with his fielding, this is an area where it's hard to project how Puig is going to be different in 2014. But he can certainly be a better base stealer if he makes the needed effort to be one, and all he has to do to be a productive baserunner otherwise is just keep doing what he's doing.
So All Told...
It's going to be a shocker if Puig ends up being the same player in 2014 that he was in 2013. There should be changes, and these changes should be for the better.
Puig is one of the rare ones who can make a hyper-aggressive approach at the plate work, but 2014 should see him be less overmatched against curveballs and in two-strike counts. It's hard to project a massive improvement in his production, but sharpening up his hitting habits should at least help him stave off a regression.

  • A better player

  • About the same

    15.1%
  • A worse player

    13.2%
As for defense and baserunning, Puig improving in those two areas will depend on him working with the Dodgers in adding a method to his madness. Because there basically was no method to his madness in 2013, it's perfectly fair to expect him to get better in these two areas rather than worse.
In all, Puig should be a better all-around player in 2014 than he was in 2013. That might come off as being overly optimistic, but it must be kept in mind that there are some unusual circumstances at work here.
Puig didn't get to play baseball in Cuba during the 2011-2012 season due to disciplinary reasons. After he defected, he only got to play 23 minor league games in the Dodgers organization at the end of 2012. With his age-21 season basically wiped out, Puig arrived in the major leagues as a highly inexperienced 22-year-old. It's only natural that his inexperience humbled him on numerous occasions.
It was Puig's talent that made him a star. And while his 2013 season may have been a rocky road that had a particularly rocky end, it did serve to arm him with some much-needed experience.
As 2013 Puig showed, talent is good. What 2014 Puig should show is that talent plus experience is even better.

(el-alto-sueño);

le pidieron las piernas

duras y nudosas

¿No me envidias?”.

Has sufrido mucho, hombre, entra, te has ganado el cielo.
